November in Mysore!

I have been here in Mysore for close to a month.  It has been one of the most relaxing and reflective months so far.  I have explored a few different places, taken a quick weekend side trip and spent time with family.  Here are some of the highlights so far:

Kukkarahalli Kere

One morning i set off to find this beautiful lake, in the center of Mysore, this picturesque lake is home to countless birds, and a few cows.  I spent almost an hour walking around the perimeter of the lake and taking countless photos.  Such a treasure and sanctuary in the middle of a city!

I also had the opportunity to tour the Mysore Silk Factory, watching as a plain woven sarees gets cut and dyed before being priced for sale.  The most impressive part is watching the saree borders being dyed by hand.  The process is slow and requires precision to ensure that only the correct area of the saree is exposed and ready for the contrast color.  Each of these sarees ends up with a deep and vibrant color that is easily recognizable from any distance.

Later on in the day, I visited a tailor, to get s a few things stitched and was mesmerized by the intricate beading a blouse.  Each bead was added by hand on the stretched out cloth!

Oh the Food!!

Of course, I have been eating plenty of tasty treats, and enjoying the Mysore Benne Masala Dosas at any chance that I get.  What makes these dosas unique, is the chutney spread inside the dosa, and the healthy dollop of butter (benne) served on top.  Dipped in coconut chutney and sambar, it is one of my most favorite treats!

On Yoga

After a bit of a false start earlier in November, I have decided to study at a different school.  My program began on December 1st.   From the moment I walked into the building, I could feel the energy and the excitement.  This is where I am supposed to be, and I am looking forward to delving into my studies among this community of yogis!  Since I had to shift things around, and because I want to focus on the intensive program, I will be posting less often over the next four weeks.  I look forward to sharing my experiences with all of you at the end of this journey!
